BRUCELLOSIS - AN INFECTIOUS DISEASE

By GPT Admin 4 April, 15, 2019

Overview

Brucellosis is one of the most highly contagious zoonosis and common diseases in Oman that is generally developed in human due to a group of bacteria named as genus Brucella. It is also known as Malta fever, Mediterranean fever or undulant fever.

Etiology

The genus Brucella causes an infection in both human and animals. The disease generally infects when the individual drinks or eats unpasteurized milk, undercooked meat or any other contaminated food. These contaminated foods include raw meat and unpasteurized milk.

Brucella can also infect the human or animal through the air or contact with an open wound. The disease has higher chances of spreading to the people who work with animals and eat contaminated food.

CDCP says that annually more than 150 cases of Brucellosis are reported. Animals like goat, dogs, and cattle, etc. have a higher chance of getting contracted to Brucellosis that can further infect the humans living with them.

Signs and Symptoms

Symptoms are special things experienced by infected individuals. If you feeling any of the symptoms of a disease, you must seek the doctor or healthcare advisor. Some of the symptoms are listed below:

  • Appetite loss
  • Back pain
  • Chills
  • Lethargy
  • Headaches
  • Pain in the abdomen
  • Pain in the joints
  • Fever that comes and goes
  • Weight Loss

If you feel any of these symptoms, you must seek your health care advisor or doctor.

Diagnosis and Treatment

After getting well-known from the symptoms of a disease, one must go through the diagnostic process in order to confirm if he or she is suffering from a disease or not. Same is the case for Brucellosis. To diagnose, the doctor will test you for Brucellosis if you have experienced flu-like symptoms. Tests might include:

  • Blood culture
  • Urine culture
  • Bone marrow culture
  • Cerebrospinal fluid testing
  • Testing for antibodies to Brucellosis.

The final stage is to treat the disease. After getting well-known from the diseases, its symptoms, and successful diagnosing process, you must get through a pure treatment of the disease in order to live a healthy life. Brucellosis is usually treated with antibiotics. One of these antibiotics may be prescribed by the doctor:

  • Doxycycline
  • Rifampin

You have to take these antibiotics for six weeks at least. In some cases, antibiotics are not enough for the treatment of bacteria. To treat the disease completely, some extra drugs are prescribed by the doctors. If the treatment becomes unsuccessful, Brucellosis might build some complications like:

  • Encephalitis
  • Lesions on the bones and joints
  • Endocarditis
  • Meningitis
