A Closer Look At Kenya Healthcare System

Kenya is found to be an eminent travel landing place in the world. It has magnificent scenery and adventurous spots to relish the entire journey. However, for more recent years, due to poor governance and leadership in the healthcare system, Kenya medical tourism is much affected. It acts as a critical building block for an effective and all-inclusive health system.

According to the study, every year 40 % of the graduate doctors travel to other countries due to lack of growth opportunities. As a result of this, Kenya seems to be a country that has a critical shortage of healthcare workers. Though primary care is provided in dispensaries, health centers, private clinics, and private sectors,  primary health has been the key reason in the alleviation of morbidity and mortality. These dispensaries are run by registered nurses. They provide outpatient services for simple ailments like fever, flu and the common cold. Whereas, secondary care is provided in the district and provincial hospitals. Medical and surgical facilities are provided there.

Most health care facilities in Kenya are below international standards with limited resources and limited capabilities. Public hospitals are understaffed, poorly equipped and lack supplies. Private clinics with limited inpatient capability are in operation in Nairobi, Mombasa, and the beach resort areas of Diani and Malindi. These services include radiology, laboratory and pharmacy services. The private AGA Khan hospital, located in Nairobi, is operating at a western standard level of care.

Above this, there have been inadequate efforts towards addressing the social detriments leading towards poor health outcomes such as poor sanitation, unhealthy urbanization, low literacy, or gender inequality. Hence, there is an urgent need for improved leadership and governance, no matter how much strong stakeholder approach is required.
