STRONGYLOIDIASIS

By GPT Admin 4 May, 09, 2019

Before you plan a tour or visit a country, you must first be aware of its health structure. If the structure suits your needs, you should surely travel to this country. But, if the health system doesn’t suit your health, you must seek your healthcare advisor or doctor and take their advice. For instance, if you are planning a visit to Myanmar (Burma), you should be vaccinated with different infection-free vaccines. Myanmar is a country in Southeast Asia which is suffering from several infectious diseases like Hepatitis A, Hepatitis E, Malaria, and Japanese Encephalitis. Strongyloidiasis is also one of the common diseases in Myanmar, which if not treated, may prove to be fatal.

Strongyloidiasis is an infection that is caused by a roundworm known as Strongyloides stercoralis. This roundworm is generally a type of parasite. An organism that lives in the human body and gains nutrients from it refers to a parasite. If this organism gets infected, he becomes host to the parasite. The disease is uncommon in the United States and its neighboring regions but is commonly found in several parts of Asia.

Symptoms of Strongyloidiasis

Usually, in most of about 50% of the cases, Strongyloidiasis shows no symptoms. The patient can prevent the infection by good personal hygiene. However, if the disease shows any symptom, it must be one of the following:

  • Upper Abdominal Burning or Pain
  • Diarrhea & Constipation
  • Cough
  • Rash
  • Red Hives Near the Anus
  • Vomiting
  • Weight Loss

These symptoms get visible a week or two after the victim is infected. However, the rashes might get visible right after the victim gets infected.

Diagnosis Of Strongyloidiasis

If you feel any of the symptom, you must seek your healthcare advisor. The doctor will get you through a series of the diagnostic process. This process will confirm that if you are really infected with it or not. Several physical and blood tests can be helpful for this purpose. To diagnose S. stercoralis, the doctor can perform the following tests:

  • Duodenal Aspiration
  • Sputum Culture
  • Stool Sample for Ova & Parasites
  • Complete Blood Count (CBC) with Differential
  • Blood Antigen Test

Treatment of Strongyloidiasis

Treatment of Strongyloidiasis refers to the removal and elimination of the worms. Getting well-known from the disease, the final stage or step is to treat the disease. For that, you only need to take a single dose of antiparasitic medication and treat Strongyloidiasis.

Stromectol is the best choice to kill the worms after it enters into the small intestine. Including this, the doctor might also prescribe two courses of Albenza. You have to take this medication for at least 10 days.

While Thiabendazole should be taken twice or thrice per day. After the infection is completely widespread, you don’t need to repeat the course again.
