Stomach Cancer

By GPT Admin 4 April, 08, 2019

Stomach cancer is one of the most death-defying diseases in Portugal that has caused thousands of deaths in the past few years. It is defined by the growth of cancerous cells within the lining of the stomach. Stomach Cancer (also said as Gastric Cancer) is a type of cancer that is very difficult to diagnose. That is because, in the earlier stages, many people show no signs or symptoms of it. Research of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) says that, in 2017, about 28,000 cases were evaluated of Stomach Cancer. The disease is not so common type of cancer, but diagnosing it is extremely complex. It doesn’t show any sign or symptom in the beginning stages and continues to spread throughout the body gradually. So it even becomes more difficult to treat.

Causes of Stomach Cancer

The stomach is a part of the upper section of your digestive system. It is responsible for the proper digestion of the food you eat. It is also obligated to move the nutrients along to the rest of your digestive organs. So, stomach cancer normally occurs when the normal healthy cells within the upper digestive system become cancerous and result in a tumor. The process is very slow and cancer continuously gets developing over the years. Some other risk factors are listed below:

  • Lymphoma
  • H. pylori bacterial infections
  • Tumors in the part of D.S
  • Stomach Polyps

It is also common among adults, smokers, men, and people with a medical history of this disease.

Symptoms of Stomach Cancer

National Cancer Institute (NCI) says that Stomach Cancer generally shows no signs or symptoms at the early stage. So the victim doesn’t even know that if he or she is suffering from a death-defying disease. However, in a very much advanced stage, there are several symptoms which show that you are suffering from Stomach Cancer:

  • Nausea & Vomiting
  • Frequent heartburn
  • Loss of appetite
  • Constant bloating
  • Feeling full after eating a small amount of food
  • Bloody stools
  • Jaundice
  • Excessive fatigue
  • Stomach pain, which may be worse after meals

Diagnosis and Treatment

The most difficult thing in this disease is to diagnose it. Since there is no sign or symptoms in the early stages, hence it becomes too much complex to diagnose cancer. In order to diagnose cancer, the doctor will first perform a physical exam to see if you are having any abnormality. The doctor may also advise a blood test especially a test of H.pylori bacteria. Much more diagnosing test may also be performed to diagnose the disease that includes:

  • An upper gastrointestinal endoscopy
  • A biopsy
  • Imaging tests including CT Scans & X-Rays

Generally, the treatment of stomach cancer depends upon cancer’s stage and its origin. The victim’s age and his or her health might also play an effective role. If the cancer is not treated, it may spread to the lungs, lymph nodes, bones, and liver. Stomach Cancer is treated with one of the following methods:

  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy
  • Surgery
  • Immunotherapy, such as vaccines & medications
