By GPT Admin 4 March, 29, 2019

Scrub typhus is a bacterial disease caused by a bacteria called Orientia tsutsugamushi. Scrub typhus is also known as bush typhus and is spread due to the biting of infected chiggers (larval mites). It is one of the most common diseases in Taiwan. The disease is also commonly found in rural areas of Southeast Asia, Indonesia, China, Japan, India, and Northern Australia. If any of the international tourists are thinking to visit any of these countries, he or she may get infected with it. So the tourist must make some preventions to become safe from this death-defying infectious disease.

Eliminating or decreasing mite populations by clearing with brush and using sprays along with residual insecticides can be helpful to prevent from Scrub Typhus. If the exposure is likely to happen, you can also use insect repellents. However, there is no vaccine available to prevent the victim from this infection.

Symptoms

In early time, no sign & symptoms occur. Ten days after the victim is affected, the signs and symptoms start happening. People who already have any disease of infection may result in organ failure and bleeding. If this organ failure is not treated, it may prove fatal. Here is the list of signs and symptoms that shows you have Scrub Typhus:

  • Fever and Chills

  • Body Aches & Muscle Pain
  • A Dark, Scab-like region at the site of the chigger bite
  • Mental Changes, ranging from confusion to coma

Diagnosis

If you recognize the symptoms, seek a doctor as soon as possible if you feel any of this symptom. You must tell your health care provider if you are traveling to a place where the risk of scrub typhus is very high. Furthermore, some laboratory test and their reports can also diagnose whether you have the disease or not. The result of these laboratory tests may take more than two to three weeks.

Treatment

There is no specific treatment of scrub typhus. However, you can treat the infected area with antibiotic doxycycline. Because it can be used for persons of every age. You can also use an antibiotic cream because it is the most effective choice even there is a rash or risk of infection increase. Yet, in many cases, the victim gets treated quickly with the use of doxycycline only.
